Sow celery and celeriac for planting outdoors in June

Sow sweetcorn, marrows, courgettes, pumpkins, and squashes towards the end of the month

Sow leeks

Continue to plant asparagus crowns

Plant maincrop potatoes

Carrots sown late this month may need carrot fly protection

Keep up with successional sowing of vegetables like lettuce, radish, beetroot, peas, broad beans, salad onions, and turnips

Plant out onions sown earlier in the year

Sow dwarf French beans under cloches

Plant seakale

Sow kohlrabi at intervals from now until August

Sow Florence fennel

Broccoli, cabbages, cauliflowers and Brussels sprouts can all be sown outside on a prepared seedbed early in the month

Thin out rows of seedlings

Protect early potato shoots from frost

Watch out for flea beetle

Support peas sown earlier

Divide chives if this was not done last month

Continue sowing and planting herbs
